The sad thing about this patient is that both her grandmother and her has cancer. Initially, Andrea was diagnose with Primary Complex which is some kind of Tuberculosis in children. She was very under weight. Can only finish less than 4 ounce of milk. Few weeks passed and they notice that she is lifting her legs and does not want to stand or walk. The doctor said that something is eating up her bones because its getting thinner. After few test, they found out that she has Histiocytosis. Now she is undergoing chemotheraphy once every week for 6 months and then once a month for 1 year. She is also now slowly getting better and I just spoke to her aunt, she is already eating well. They said that its because of the steroids.

The remaining $67.00 x P40/$1 = P2,680.00. Gave them P3,000 for the laboratories and their expenses. This money is not enough to cover all their expenses but at least we contributed. I also gave them some canned goods and groceries.

I was not able to get the receipt for the laboratories but I can promise you that the money was given to them.

Right now, the one providing the financial help is her aunt who works in Dubai. She got here March 12, 2009. She will go back to Dubai after holy week. She is taking care of both her mother who has cancer and her grand daughter.

We selected these patients among others because they were so fragile at 1 month of age and at the same time, with a little assistance we can already make a big difference in their lives.

They arrive at the hospital around two in the afternoon. The parents havent eaten lunch yet and were so hungry. They have no money and so we gave them to buy food as well as medical supplies. It is important that they get treated right away because both the babies' mouth are turning blue because there were alot of secretions that needs to be suctioned so that the babies can breath without obstructions.

These pictures below were taken a few days after. They are recovering well and responding to medications.

We only spent P1,566 pesos which is equivalent to around $33 dollars because there were leftovers medicines from previous donations and we were able to use them.

Princess was the first to leave the hospital as her condition was getting alot better. Few days after, Quennie followed.

They are now back at their homes in Victorias City.

They were really thankful for the donations given.

We were not able to catch them when they left the hospital. They paid the hospital bills which is not much, only around P1,000+ pesos.

We were told that the patient was doing really good the previous days. The patient was also on NPO, meaning that the he should not be fed nor even drink water because of the danger of being aspirated. What happen was the mother fed her child because she said that the child was complaining of being hungry. Few minutes pass after the mother fed the child, the child died. Possible cause is aspiration.

What is bacterial meningitis?
Meningitis is an infection of the fluid in the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. Meningitis is usually caused by an infection with a virus or a bacterium. Knowing whether meningitis is caused by a virus or a bacterium is important because of differences in the seriousness of the illness and the treatment needed.

VIRAL MENINGITIS is usually relatively mild. It clears up within a week or two without specific treatment. Viral meningitis is also called aseptic meningitis.

BACTERIAL MENINGITIS is much more serious. It can cause severe disease that can result in brain damage and even death.

Where is bacterial meningitis found?
Bacterial meningitis is found worldwide. The bacteria often live harmlessly in a person's mouth and throat. In rare instances, however, they can break through the body's immune defenses and travel to the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. There they begin to multiply quickly. Soon, the thin membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord (meninges) becomes swollen and inflamed, leading to the classic symptoms of meningitis.

How do people get bacterial meningitis?
The bacteria are spread by direct close contact with the discharges from the nose or throat of an infected person. Fortunately, none of the bacteria that cause meningitis are very contagious, and they are not spread by casual contact or by simply breathing the air where a person with meningitis has been.

What are the signs and symptoms of bacterial meningitis?
In persons over age 2, common symptoms are high fever, headache, and stiff neck. These symptoms can develop over several hours, or they may take 1 to 2 days. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, and sleepiness. In advanced disease, bruises develop under the skin and spread quickly.
In newborns and infants, the typical symptoms of fever, headache, and neck stiffness may be hard to detect. Other signs in babies might be inactivity, irritability, vomiting, and poor feeding.
As the disease progresses, patients of any age can have seizures.

Who is at risk for bacterial meningitis?
Anyone can get bacterial meningitis, but it is most common in infants and children. People who have had close or prolonged contact with a patient with meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis or Hib can also be at increased risk. This includes people in the same household or day-care center, or anyone with direct contact with discharges from a meningitis patient's mouth or nose.

How is bacterial meningitis diagnosed?
The diagnosis is usually made by growing bacteria from a sample of spinal fluid. The spinal fluid is obtained by a spinal tap. A doctor inserts a needle into the lower back and removes some fluid from the spinal canal. Identification of the type of bacteria responsible for the meningitis is important for the selection of correct antibiotic treatment.

What complications can result from bacterial meningitis?
Advanced bacterial meningitis can lead to brain damage, coma, and death. Survivors can suffer long-term complications, including hearing loss, mental retardation, paralysis, and seizures.

What is the treatment for bacterial meningitis?
Early diagnosis and treatment are very important. If symptoms occur, the patient should see a doctor right away. Bacterial meningitis can be treated with a number of effective antibiotics. It is important, however, that treatment be started early.

Is bacterial meningitis an emerging infectious disease?
With the decline in Hib disease, cases of bacterial meningitis have decreased since 1986. Meningococcal meningitis is a continuing threat in day-care centers and schools. Healthy children and young adults are susceptible, and death can occur within a few hours of onset.

How can bacterial meningitis be prevented?
Vaccines -- There are vaccines against Hib, some strains of Neisseria meningitidis, and many types of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The vaccines against Hib are very safe and highly effective. By age 6 months of age, every infant should receive at least three doses of an Hib vaccine. A fourth dose (booster) should be given to children between 12 and 18 months of age.

The vaccine against Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcal vaccine) is not routinely used in civilians in the United States and is relatively ineffective in children under age 2 years. The vaccine is sometimes used to control outbreaks of some types of meningococcal meningitis in the United States. New meningococcal vaccines are under development.

The vaccine against Streptococcal pneumoniae (pneumococcal vaccine) is not effective in persons under age 2 years but is recommended for all persons over age 65 and younger persons with certain medical problems. New pneumococcal vaccines are under development.

Disease reporting -- Cases of bacterial meningitis should be reported to state or local health authorities so that they can follow and treat close contacts of patients and recognize outbreaks.

Treatment of close contacts -- People who are identified as close contacts of a person with meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis can be given antibiotics to prevent them from getting the disease. Antibiotics for contacts of a person with Hib disease are no longer recommended if all contacts 4 years of age or younger are fully vaccinated.

Travel precautions -- Although large epidemics of bacterial meningitis do not occur in the United States, some countries experience large, periodic epidemics of meningococcal disease. Overseas travelers should check to see if meningococcal vaccine is recommended for their destination. Travelers should receive the vaccine at least 1 week before departure, if possible.

Its one thing to see the pictures we have taken but its a whole different story if you are there to witness these children. Common characteristics of meningistis is increase intracranial pressure. Their personality changes, they go into a deep sleep.

Aside from PTB & Bacterial Meningitis, she also needs a blood transfusion. The parents told me that only half of the desired amount of blood was transfuse. It was because they did not have the money to pay the hospital for donation which is only P100.00. By donating P100.00, the hospital will let you borrow blood, then in the future, all you just need to do is replace it if you have someone who has the same blood type. Anyway, I gave them the P100.00.

Again please note that these medication that we bought them are only partial medications. We will check on them this Monday November 24, 2008.

If you look at the perscription below, her anti-bacterial medicines are very expensive. I thought that it would be best that they first talk to their doctor and ask their doctor for a substitute medicine that is equally effective but not too expensive. We know that once you are taking an anti-bacterial medication, that you should take it daily without skipping a dose for a period of time. Anyway, we got him a Kidz Kit for Pulmonary Tuberculosis because he has it as well.

I doubled check the medication chart to see how long will the Cefepine antibiotic worth P2,378.00 last. The doctor ordered 495 mg every 12 hours. That means that 1 bottle of Cefipine will only last for 1 day. They have been in the hospital for a month and they havent gone to look for sponsors for their child. I asked them why havent you done so. Anyway, I told them to ask for help from ABS-CBN, bombo radio because YOUgive alone cannot support them because of how expensive her child's medicine.

I only bought the other antibiotic for the meantime.

Just a little insite on how bad the status of the pediatric ward. Two patient share one hospital bed. One patient on the other side and the other patient on the other end of the bed. I ask one of the staff nurse to point out parents who cannot comply with medications because they cannot afford the medicines, he pointed out alot of patients. While we were there we even witness a 7 month old infant die because of asthma. The 7 month old infant was brought by his parents from binalbagan just last night because the infant was having a hard time breathing.

The perscription drug Salbutamol listed below is used for the relief of bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Salbutamol sulfate is usually given by the inhaled route for direct effect on bronchial smooth muscle. This is usually achieved through a metered dose inhaler (MDI), nebuliser or other proprietary delivery devices (e.g. Rotahaler or Autohaler). In these forms of delivery, the maximal effect of Salbutamol can take place within five to twenty minutes of dosing, though some relief is immediately seen. Salbutamol can also be given orally as an inhalant or intravenously.

The day after we provided him with medicines, doctors are keeping a close eye on him because he had a high fever last night. Lets just pray that he will survive. I can empathize with the parents. I can feel how concern they are with their babies but cannot do anything because they have no money to buy what is needed to help the child.

Went to the pediatric ward again to check on the status of the patients we sponsored. We noticed no big improvement, there were additional medicines prescribed by the doctor. It was not much, total amount was only $327.00.

The receipt shown above is only P292.00 plus the P35.00 aminophyline which I bought separately.

"Jaypee" is getting better. We bought most of his antibiotics. It will be good for until our next visit. We did not buy the complete set because the store that sells medicine at wholesale price told us that they will have the "ceftazidine" next week. They are out of stock right now.

Added also 5 Amikacin 500 mg worth P175.00. We found a wholesaler for this medicine and so we got it in a very cheap price. Minimum of 10 vials.

coughing. The airway constriction responds to bronchodilators. Between episodes, most patients feel well but can have mild symptoms and they may remain short of breath after exercise for

from mild to life threatening, can usually be controlled with a combination of drugs and
environmental changes.

The nurse on duty reported that she had a convulsion last night. We gave them P350.00 for the oxygen and P100.00 pesos for the dextrose. We also paid for his ABG (arterial blood gas) P400.00 inorder for the doctor to determine what course to take to best help this girl.

Below are scanned Doctor's Perscription Orders that they cannot comply. If they cannot comply then, there is nothing more the doctor can do.

The perscription drug Salbutamol listed below is used for the relief of bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Salbutamol sulfate is usually given by the inhaled route for direct effect on bronchial smooth muscle. This is usually achieved through a metered dose inhaler (MDI), nebuliser or other proprietary delivery devices (e.g. Rotahaler or Autohaler). In these forms of delivery, the maximal effect of Salbutamol can take place within five to twenty minutes of dosing, though some relief is immediately seen. Salbutamol can also be given orally as an inhalant or intravenously.

Hydrocortisone on the other hand is a natural corticosteroid produced by the adrenal glands located adjacent to the kidneys. Corticosteroids have potent anti-inflammatory properties, and are used in a wide variety of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, colitis, asthma, bronchitis, certain skin rashes, and allergic or inflammatory conditions of the nose and eyes.

Went again to the hospital to see how are patient is doing. "Rica Lou" was transfered to the Intensive Care Unit because she was having a hard time breathing last night.

Status asthmaticus is an acute exacerbation of asthma that does not respond to standard treatments of bronchodilators and corticosteroids. Symptoms include chest tightness, rapidly progressive dyspnea (shortness of breath), dry cough and wheezing.

The lung failure means that oxygen can no longer be provided, carbon dioxide can no longer be eliminated, which leads to acidosis.

It is characterized histologically by smooth muscle hyperplasia and basement membrane thickening.

This project of giving back to people in need would not have come to reality without the help of my mom. She had a feeling in her heart that she needed to share her hard earned money to people in need.

Let me narrate it down so that you can get a feel on how it got started. It's Tuesday afternoon, the 18th of November 2008. Our goal for this day is to help pediatric patients in Provicial Hospital Bacolod. We feel that they are the most fragile patients in the hostpital so we went straight to the pediatric ward. We got our budget for the day which is $100.
The exchange rate for dollar is P49.75 to $1 so we have around P4975.00.

We talked to the doctor on duty, he pointed out 4 patients that would really benefit if they have medicines, but because they cannot comply with the medications, their help is now on the balance. He gave us prescriptions for the four patients, interviewed the parents and then went off to buy those supplies and medicines. We brought it back to the nurse station where those medicines will be prepared and administered to patients on doctor's orders. I brought a digital camera with me hoping to get a picture of the patients with their permission ofcourse, but for some reason, the battery was not charged. Anyway, we figured we can go back tomorrow and take a picture of our patients.

We manage to help 4 patients in the pediatric ward that needed.

P.S While we were interviewing them, we did not tell anyone that we would buy their medicines for their children or else everybody will swarm at us. I will add more to this introduction tomorrow so please stay tune.
